Der originale "Monkey Shoulder" war einer meiner ersten "teureren/gehobeneren" Whiskys. Er wird mir auf ewig positiv in Erinnerung und auf der Zunge bleiben. Ein toller, zugänglicher und fruchtiger Tropfen. Mit einer grandiosen Flasche. Die Flasche ist bei der "Smoked" Version dieselbe in brauner - aber was kann der Juice?
"Smokey Monkey Shoulder" ist noch eindeutig ein "Monkey Shoulder" - probiert sich aber etwas in einer Sportart oder Gewichtsklasse, die ungewohnt (für ihn) scheint und bei der ich mir noch nicht 100% sicher bin, ob ihm das liegt. Ich schmecke immer noch getrocknete Äpfel, Birnen und Banenen. Etwas bitter, etwas pfeffrig. Nun aber unterlegt durch eine In-your-Face-Rauchigkeit, die nicht zu verdrängen, zu verleugnen, zu unterschätzen ist. Das muss man schon mögen, das nimmt dem Affen ein gutes Stück seiner Leichtigkeit. Gorilla im Smoking?! Ein wenig scharf und alkoholisch wirkt er auf mich obendrauf. Ein interessanter Blend - aber für mich kein direkter Must-Drink wie seine "Bruderflasche".
Fazit: nicht besser, aber dunkler als das "Original"... Der "Smokey Monkey Shoulder" ist noch immer einsteigerfreundlich, nun aber mit einer rauchigen Hürde. Ihm steht meiner Meinung nach die helle Robe besser. Im torfigen Segment gibt's genügend stärkere Alternativen. Dennoch liegt mir die grundsätzliche DNA des Whiskys und der Marke sehr.
